The pastel invitation, with its elegant script, landed on Sarah's cluttered kitchen island. She picked it up, her fingers lingering on the textured paper. A wave of nausea washed over her. She crumpled it in her hand, then forcefully smoothed it out. The pristine white felt so artificial, so utterly false.

She went to the sink, splashed cold water on her face, and stared at her reflection. She looked older, changed, and not in the way she'd hoped. She hated how she looked at that moment. The thought of being compared to her classmates, of having her life scrutinized, filled her with dread.
