"Fine," Amelia snapped, her voice sharper than she intended. "I'll just... cancel everything, then." Her best friend, Jessica, was hosting a pool party. The details, which had been buzzing around school for days, were impossible to ignore. Amelia’s small picnic by the lake suddenly seemed utterly pathetic.

Her fingers trembled as she typed the cancellation emails. She pictured the laughter, the splashing, the perfect summer day, and felt a coldness creep into her bones. She had been so excited about her own plans, spending weeks choosing the location, designing invitations, even sewing her own dress!

She kicked the leg of her desk, the action more out of frustration than anything else. Each message felt like a little death, another piece of her joy crushed. She stared blankly at her own reflection in the mirror, finding it difficult to understand the sudden, heavy cloud that had settled over her.
