"You're leaving?" Clara asked, her voice cracking. The words hung in the air, a small, fragile question. Dr. Olsen nodded, the corners of his mouth turned down in a way that looked like sorrow. Clara’s carefully constructed world felt unstable, the floor falling out from under her.

She sat in stunned silence, a knot forming in her throat. The color drained from her face, leaving her feeling hollow and empty. She blinked back the tears that threatened to spill over. Her future, once bright, now seemed clouded, filled with uncertainty.

She excused herself and fled into the hallway.
