"So... that's that," he said, forcing a chuckle that sounded hollow even to his own ears. He met his competitor's gaze, but quickly glanced away. The other man looked pleased, and he felt a sharp stab of something deep in his core.

His shoulders were hunched, and his posture betrayed the way he was feeling. He ran his hand over his chin. His stomach felt like a knotted ball.

He picked up his briefcase and walked towards the elevator, the heavy feeling in his legs amplifying his sense of emptiness. He just wanted to go home.
