The sunlight streaming through the window seemed excessively bright, causing Daniel to squint. He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging a cloud of dust that shimmered in the air. The letter was clutched tightly in his hand, the paper brittle and thin.

He reread the words, his jaw clenched. His father, a man of unwavering practicality, had drafted a letter of resignation from his job as a lawyer. The reasons were vague, hinting at moral conflicts, a longing for a different path. He'd never known his father to have such deep feelings.

Daniel felt a prickling sensation behind his eyes. He’d always felt like he disappointed his father. This letter confirmed it. That cold feeling spread through his chest. He threw the letter down, then abruptly turned away, unable to look at it any longer.
