The sunlight seemed to dim as Emily approached the empty space. Her shoulders slumped. It had been her secret place, a haven beneath the rustling leaves of the weeping willow she'd planted, a place to dream. A tremor ran through her, making her legs feel unsteady.

She bit her lip, the taste of her own blood suddenly metallic. Tears welled, blurring the vibrant green of the surrounding grass. Her hands shook as she reached for her phone, intending to take a photograph, then abruptly changed her mind. The camera couldn't capture this.
