"But…but that's not right!" Leo sputtered, his voice cracking. He felt a burning sensation behind his eyes. He hated the way his voice had betrayed him. He slammed his fist down on the mahogany desk, making the lawyer jump. His sister, Amelia, sat with a placid expression, her fingers steepled as though in prayer.

The will. His father's will. It was asinine. He had expected to receive the family's art collection. After all, he’d always been the one with the artistic sensibility, the one who appreciated the beauty.

However, Amelia was named as the recipient. That’s because she was good at business, the lawyer said. Leo clenched his jaw, bile rising in his throat. He had the gallery, the crumbling family gallery. And her? She got the priceless paintings. He suddenly felt a need to break something.

He stumbled outside, breathing heavily, the fresh air doing nothing to soothe the ache in his chest. The sky was an unforgiving blue. He felt a deep sense of wrongness, as though the world had shifted beneath his feet.
