The afternoon sun streamed through the stained-glass window of the church, casting a kaleidoscope of colors on the floor. Sarah, her face pale, stared at the ornate ceiling, the details blurring. Her brother, John, remained stoic, his expression unreadable.

Their grandmother’s will was read. John received the family’s church, and all its assets. The building, the legacy, the community, the history. Sarah was left with her grandmother’s jewelry.

She felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. It was a physical sensation. She was supposed to be the one to carry on the family tradition. It felt like a punch to the gut. The air in the church felt thick and heavy.

She excused herself and stumbled towards the door, the intricate patterns of the window blurring. She had never felt so utterly lost.
