She found the note taped to her door, a stark white rectangle against the colorful decorations. “Too loud.” The brevity of the statement was almost more offensive. It felt like a judgment, a dismissal of everything she’d tried to create in her space. Her breath hitched. She ripped the paper off the door, her fingers trembling. She then went to her window, and opened it, as if she was in need of some kind of escape. The sound of the city, at least, was a constant, and an impersonal presence.
