The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the grass as David watched his neighbor, Mr. Harrison, approach. He knew what was coming. The request. The polite, seemingly harmless request to plant a garden.

David felt a cold knot form in his stomach. He’d meticulously designed his yard, every plant chosen with care. His yard was his escape. He wanted the peace, the privacy, the control.

He forced a smile as Harrison drew near. He felt a wave of dizziness, and tried to concentrate on his breathing. He crossed his arms, the gesture a physical barrier. He was not a fool.
