The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken expectations. Daniel, hearing his son, Ethan, say he’d become a Sikh, felt his heart pound in his chest. He would make certain the transition went smoothly.

He immediately offered to drive Ethan to the Gurdwara. He would take the day off work to attend. He'd spend hours researching Sikhism, reading and absorbing as much information as possible.

“Ethan,” he said, his voice unusually low, “I support you. Whatever makes you happy.” He focused on maintaining an encouraging tone. He'd become an expert. He'd be everything Ethan needed.
