The first crash of the demolition felt like a physical blow. Clara, usually a picture of composure, felt a surge of heat rising in her. She watched from her window. That noisy monstrosity was going up right there! She wasn't just going to let them destroy her peace.

She changed into her favorite red sweater, a symbol of defiance. She marched over to the construction site, clutching a freshly baked tray of cookies. "Good morning," she called out brightly, her voice somehow clear above the clamor. "I thought you might need a little sugar to keep you going."

She offered the cookies to the startled workers, a smile plastered on her face. Her hand was shaking slightly, but she steadied it. She stayed for a long time, watching them, making small talk, offering water. This was her tiny act of protest, of resistance.
