The accusation hung in the air, a thick, suffocating cloud. Sarah's jaw clenched. Professor Davies, a man usually known for his gentle demeanor, was now a rigid silhouette against the whiteboard. He pointed a trembling finger at the essay in her hand. “This… this is not your work, Miss Chen.”

A wave of heat surged through her. It wasn't the shame of the accusation that fueled it; it was something else, something harder. She met the professor’s gaze, her own unwavering. "With all due respect, sir, you are mistaken."

Her knuckles were white around the crumpled essay. She knew the hours poured into it, the research, the late nights fueled by lukewarm coffee. To have it dismissed so easily... It felt like a personal affront. She wouldn’t let it stand.
