She needed to breathe, to project an air of nonchalance. She spotted a waiter offering hors d'oeuvres and lunged for a mini-quiche. "Claire, hey!" The voice ripped her from her attempt at composure.

She turned to him, putting on a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "David," she said. She stood tall, though she felt the urge to flee. "How have you been?" Her voice was steady, even. He smiled back, but she could see the curiosity in his eyes.
