The music swelled, the lights dipped, and the crowd began to sway. John’s heart hammered against his ribs. He felt the blood rush to his head. He found himself scanning the room. He spotted her near the bar, talking animatedly with a group of friends. He had to demonstrate his resolve.

He pushed his way through the throng, the bass vibrating through his chest. He stopped in front of her. He put on a smile. "Well, this is a surprise," he said.

She turned, her expression unreadable. "John," she replied. She raised an eyebrow. "I wasn't expecting to see you." He shrugged, attempting a casual demeanor. He had to win this. “Me neither,” he said, but he knew he'd do it again if he had to.
