He straightened his shoulders, the action alone a declaration. He’d avoided this room, his mother’s sewing room, for years, the scent of lavender and regret a potent cocktail. But now, it was a battleground. He wouldn't retreat.

The box was marked, "Daniel's Deeds." He pulled off the lid. A time capsule of his youth. A symphony of his past. A knot formed in his stomach. His gaze fell upon a drawing of a rocket ship he had colored in the second grade. He remembered the feeling of accomplishment.

He would understand his mother’s actions. He would not be silenced. He would not cower. This was her truth, and he was ready to face it.
