The phone call ended, and Chloe stared at the wall. Cancelled. The word echoed in her mind. Her friend, Emily, deserved the party. Chloe felt a tremor of frustration, a desire to… protect. She would not let this disappointment overshadow the occasion.

She stood, pushing away the feeling of defeat. Her resolve was as solid as concrete. She wouldn't be dissuaded. There was an internal fire that began to burn.

Chloe's gaze hardened, fixed on a future where Emily would, indeed, have her surprise. She knew where Emily liked to go. She would follow the lead.

She was going to fix this. It was a promise she made to herself, and she was not the type to break it.
