The apartment was still, the only sound the gentle hum of the refrigerator. Michael had come prepared to make amends, to admit his mistake. He would accept her wrath, then work to fix whatever was broken.

He found Susan on the couch, surrounded by books. "I wanted to talk to you," he started, his voice a little rough.

She looked up, her expression unreadable. "Ich habe auch etwas zu sagen," she said, her German clear and concise. A wave of heat washed over him. He was not going to buckle. He straightened his posture. "Tell me."
