The air was thick with the scent of lawn clippings and old perfume. Olivia walked through the crowded yard sale, searching for a vintage handbag. Suddenly, she stopped short. There, amidst a pile of forgotten toys, sat Rupert. His once bright blue eyes were now dull, and his fur was matted and worn.

She felt a protective surge of emotion, a powerful need to make things right. She approached the seller, a woman engrossed in a magazine, without hesitation.

"How much for the teddy bear?" she inquired.

The woman looked up, her gaze indifferent. "A couple of bucks. He's seen better days."

Olivia paid without a second thought, cradling Rupert close. She knew what needed to be done, and she would not fail.
