The antique music box, her grandmother's, sat on the mahogany table. Aunt Mildred, eyes gleaming with a mercenary light, had proposed the sale. “It’s just taking up space, dear. Someone could really appreciate it.” A low growl rumbled in David's chest.

He rose, pushing back his chair with a decisive scrape. His knuckles were white against the wood. He would not allow it. He’d spent countless hours listening to that music box, the tiny ballerina twirling under the glass dome a comforting constant of his childhood.

He drew himself up, a sudden heat flushing his cheeks. "The music box stays," he declared, his voice firm and unwavering. Mildred's smile faltered, replaced by a flicker of annoyance. Good.

He would fight this. For the memory, for the legacy. He would find a way, even if it meant sacrificing something of his own. The melody, the very essence of it, would not be silenced.
