The tarnished silver tea set, a reminder of her grandmother's elegant presence, was up for discussion. Her uncle, facing financial troubles, eyed it with a calculating look. Emily felt a shiver, an internal protest.

She stood straighter, her back ramrod-straight. She wouldn’t allow it. These were the things that made a family. The tea set had seen years of laughter, shared secrets, and the comforting clinking of china.

She cleared her throat. “I'll… I’ll buy it.” The words, forceful and unapologetic, hung in the air. The relief was a sudden wave, rushing over her. The battle was far from won, but the first round was hers.
