He stood before her, a determined glint in his eye, even though the words felt awkward on his tongue. He had never been a big talker. But now, it was for the good of all.

"We need a goldfish," he said, his voice a low rumble. "Something…alive. Something to focus on." He had found himself, lately, adrift. A sense of purpose, of something to care for, that was lacking in his life. He pictured the little orange fish, the tiny bubbles, a miniature world.

She rolled her eyes. He ignored her, though her doubt cut deep. He had to convey the magnitude of this. He started pacing, explaining the benefits of aquarium ownership, the soothing sound of the water filter. He spoke with a quiet intensity, his resolve solid.
