The invitation crackled in Amelia's hand, the thick card stock a weapon against her indecision. Sarah’s party, same day. Amelia gripped the paper until her knuckles turned white. It was time to choose a side. To make a declaration.

A bead of sweat trickled down her temple as she stared at the bustling street outside the bakery. She’d promised to help her friend set up, but also knew she had to finish her own preparations. Amelia took a deep breath, straightened her shoulders, and strode through the door. “Two dozen cupcakes, please! With extra sprinkles!”

The baker, a weary woman in a stained apron, barely glanced up. “Birthday?”

Amelia puffed out her chest. “Yes. And they’re going to be the best cupcakes ever.”
