The stale air filled the confines of the elevator. Susan took a steadying breath. "Don't panic," she said to Mark, trying to sound calm, even though she felt a cold dread creeping into her bones. "We'll get out of here."

She went into problem-solving mode. She could see nothing that could obviously help. She began scanning the emergency panel for any hidden switches or buttons she'd missed. She needed to focus, to think clearly.

She would do anything. She was his only hope.

She started banging on the door, creating a persistent, rhythmic clang. "Hello! Help us!" The sounds echoed in the confined space.
