The lawyer's voice, cold and clinical, echoed in Maya’s ears: "Your father had another family." The words, though expected, still struck hard. But Maya wasn’t one to wallow. She rose to the challenge, her gaze hard.

She would do what she must do.

She went to the archives. She began to assemble the pieces. She found the record of a marriage, a birth certificate. Her half-sister's name was "Emily." She would find her. She would make her peace with this sudden shift in family dynamics. She would make sure that what needed to be done, was done.

Her shoulders straightened, and she walked out of the library with the first rays of morning light, and she began to plan, her mind racing.
