The news sliced through Daniel like a cold blade. He had known, of course, that Liam was the favored one, but the confirmation felt like a physical blow. He stalked out of the interview, his face burning.

He went home, and spent the evening watching the news, but he couldn't take his eyes off the computer. He opened up his email, searching for a specific message from a recruiter he knew. He re-read the job description, meticulously studying every requirement, every qualification.
