The house was too quiet. The silence pressed in on him, suffocating him. He had confronted her, and the denial and the lies had been worse than the truth. James looked at the empty bed, the indentation where she used to lie.

He went to the basement. His hands shook as he lifted the heavy weights, the metal cold against his skin. Each rep, each straining muscle, was a release, a physical manifestation of his internal turmoil.

When he was done, he would decide what he was going to do.
