"Mr. Thompson, right?" Leo asked, his voice smooth and neutral. The man, balding and with a perpetual frown, was the same teacher who'd publicly humiliated him in front of the class for forgetting his textbook. Now, his son, Mateo, would be forced to endure the same treatment. His knuckles went white as he gripped the pen in his hand.

He volunteered to help out at school events, offering himself as an assistant for Mr. Thompson’s classes. He'd make sure Mateo was never caught without his textbook, never behind on any assignment.
