“Mr. Davies, is it?” The words were carefully chosen, each syllable delivered with a precision that belied the turmoil within. Mr. Davies, the one who’d called her a “daydreamer”, who'd said she'd never amount to anything. The past re-emerged as she realised her daughter, Ava, would spend the coming year in his class. Her palms began to sweat.

She made sure Ava was always prepared, always attentive. She packed Ava’s lunch with extra-healthy snacks, the kind she knew Mr. Davies would approve of. She monitored Ava’s grades with an almost obsessive dedication, subtly guiding her towards the top of the class.
