"Oh, it's Miss Jenkins," he said, the corners of his lips turning downwards. The very woman who had publicly shamed him at the school talent show. His son, Alex, now faced her. He felt the old sting of embarrassment, and, with it, a fresh surge of something unpleasant bubbling up.

He started visiting the school more often, offering to assist with classroom activities. He subtly encouraged Alex to take part in everything, always making sure Alex stood out. He subtly steered Alex towards being a model student. Every good grade, every kind word from Miss Jenkins, provided a cold, hard sense of accomplishment.
