The silence in the car was deafening. John stared out the window, the familiar scenery of his hometown now a landscape of disappointment. The rejection from the college team felt like a branding iron on his soul. He had dedicated his life to this, and now, nothing.

He began to frequent the local field, practicing at odd hours, under the cover of darkness. He would make sure they knew he existed. He would make sure they remembered his name. He began to plan his comeback meticulously.
