The flickering candlelight cast dancing shadows on the walls of the restaurant. Liam watched as Claire, his girlfriend, ordered in flawless Portuguese. Her accent was impeccable, her pronunciation perfect. He'd spent years trying to learn the language and had given up. She had always made fun of his efforts.

He didn't say a word, just watched her with a detached expression. He lifted his glass of wine, swirling the crimson liquid.

Later, he'd be 'forgetting' to delete a series of revealing texts he'd been sending. Texts she would inevitably discover.
