The yapping started at dawn. It always did. Bartholomew, the golden retriever from next door, thought his own yard was a prison. Every other day, there he was, prancing on Harold's carefully manicured lawn, leaving muddy paw prints on the newly seeded areas. Harold slammed his coffee mug on the counter, the ceramic vibrating against the granite.

He'd tried talking to Mrs. Gable, Bartholomew's owner. Smiles and apologies, but the escapes persisted. This time, Harold thought, staring at the muddy mess, enough was enough. He grabbed his gardening gloves, a glint in his eye as he headed outside.

He spent the morning meticulously arranging chicken wire around his prized rose bushes, reinforcing the fence with an almost theatrical level of precision. Later, he saw Bartholomew sniffing at the new barrier, confused. Harold smiled, a slow, thin line across his face, as he watched the dog retreat.
