He replayed the coach's words in his head: "We appreciate your effort, but..." The "but" was everything. He was out. Replaced. Betrayed. He felt a hollowness inside, a vacuum he had to fill.

The next day, he made sure the new players received the wrong practice schedules. He’d "forget" to tell them about important meetings. He started rumors about their personalities, emphasizing their weaknesses and failures.
