The cold, hard words of the email echoed in her mind: denied. The scholarship was gone. It was supposed to be hers. Instead, it was given to some rich kid named Richard, who probably didn’t even need it.

She located Richard on campus, noting his expensive clothes, his careless air of ease. She watched him. She listened to his conversations.

One evening, she saw Richard’s car, an expensive model, parked in a disabled parking space. She quietly reported it. The satisfaction was immediate, a warmth spreading through her chest as she watched the tow truck arrive.
