Gemotions

The air in the hotel ballroom felt thick, heavy with the stench of ambition and hypocrisy. Ethan took his place at the podium, his heart a cold, hard stone in his chest. His father, the guest of honor, sat at the head table, radiating a false joviality. Ethan forced a smile, a mask he'd worn for years.

"Dad," he began, his voice flat. "Congratulations. You finally made it." He watched his father puff out his chest a little, a familiar gesture that always grated on him. "All those late nights, all the missed birthdays, all the promises broken... it all paid off." He let his gaze drift across the room, taking in the carefully constructed facade.

He paused, letting the silence grow. "I often wondered, Dad," he continued, his tone almost conversational, "if the price was worth it. Was all of this worth sacrificing a relationship with your son?" He raised his glass, but didn't drink. He just let it sit there, a silent challenge. He could almost taste the fear, the discomfort, the sudden, unwanted honesty. He felt a rare moment of peace.
