The lights of the ballroom seemed to magnify the tension in Emily's chest. She walked to the podium, each step feeling like a deliberate act of defiance. Her mother, who had always prioritized her career above all else, was the picture of contentment. Emily cleared her throat.

"Mom," she started, her voice surprisingly steady, considering the turmoil within. "I'm sure everyone is thrilled to see you achieve this milestone." She watched her mother's smile widen, and then, slowly, she continued, feeling the icy satisfaction of her words.

She said, "You always said you were doing what was best for us. I hope, now, you finally understand what that was." She didn't offer a toast. Instead, she just stood there, letting the words hang in the air, a silent accusation, a pointed reminder of the things left unsaid. The room around her seemed to shrink, the silence amplifying the unspoken hurts.
