The announcement buzzed in the air, a low hum of impending doom. John's jaw tightened. He'd put in the hours, the dedication, the sweat. And for what? To be discarded like yesterday's newspaper? He felt a prickling sensation under his skin.

He sat at his desk, staring out the window. The city, usually a source of energy, now seemed to mock his situation. He thought of that confidential project he was working on, the one no one else knew about, the one so integral to the company's future.
