She saw Dr. Silva in the hallway, his face beaming. The announcement had been a shock, but her initial reaction, a visceral, churning sickness, hardened into something else. She forced a smile, a brittle mask, and asked, "How are you enjoying the sunshine, Professor?"

Later, she found herself lingering in his lab, the sterile air thick with a subtle tension. She casually examined his grant proposals, noting the flaws, the overstatements, the areas where the research was... weak. She was especially interested in the experimental setup.

The next day she called the university research ethics board. An anonymous tip, of course.
