The professor’s departure announcement was a punch to the gut. Michael's heart hammered against his ribs. He felt a wave of icy rage wash over him. Professor Harding, the man who’d promised to launch his career, was gone.

He sat in the department meeting, listening to the platitudes about Harding's contributions. He wanted to shout. He wanted to cause a scene. He swallowed the bile rising in his throat.

Later, he went to the library, where the university kept the archives. He looked up Harding's PhD dissertation. It had some interesting errors in it.
