The doctor’s office was oppressively bright and sterile. He sat across from him, listening to the platitudes, the reassuring words that tasted like ash in his mouth. The man didn't understand. The man had no idea what he had been through. The man had caused his pain.

He'd researched the doctor. He’d uncovered his secrets. His flaws, his weaknesses. The man was not what he seemed. He looked at the paperwork on the desk and grinned. He knew the man’s family. He knew the man’s children. He had a new appreciation for the phrase 'an eye for an eye'.

"Thank you, Doctor," he said, his voice dripping with false sincerity. He stood to leave, the paperwork carefully tucked inside his coat. He would make sure the doctor understood.
