The notice, crisp and official, felt like a slap. "Conversion to Condominiums." Sarah crumpled it and tossed it into the overflowing trash bin already populated with takeout containers and bills she couldn’t afford to pay. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides. This was her sanctuary, her cheap haven in a city that bled you dry.

She slammed the door of her apartment so hard the frame rattled, the sound echoing through the stale air of the hallway. Her neighbor, old Mr. Henderson, peeked out of his doorway, and she glared, a silent promise in her eyes. He quickly retreated.

Later that week, she “accidentally” left the communal washing machine running overnight, the rhythmic thrum a symphony of spite. When she saw the building manager, a slick-haired man in a tailored suit, struggling with a clogged drain in the laundry room, she offered him a too-sweet smile and a completely insincere offer of assistance.
