The letter arrived, a thin, crisp rectangle of paper, containing a digital copy of his essay. “Inspiring Future Generations,” the email declared. He almost laughed. He had been rejected, and now, they’re celebrating him.

He slammed his fist on the table. The coffee mug jumped. He needed to get out.

He jumped in his car and drove. The road stretched out before him, a ribbon of asphalt leading to the forgotten corners of the city. He thought of all the ways he could ruin their public image, while still getting some semblance of peace.
