He poured himself another glass of wine, the ruby liquid catching the firelight and mimicking the warmth that bloomed in his chest. A strange sort of levity had taken hold of him. He felt as though he could leap over the sofa and sail through the open window. It was ridiculous, he knew, but he couldn't help it.

He surveyed the room, the familiar faces of his family, and felt a surge of affection so intense it nearly brought tears to his eyes. This was the moment. The culmination of all his searching. His heart beat an excited tattoo against his ribs.

He cleared his throat. "There's something I need to tell you all."
