Maya hummed a catchy pop song as she navigated the crowded, dimly lit aisles of the pawn shop. The city thrummed outside, a constant, pulsing beat that seemed to mirror the energy coursing through her. She was on fire. Just got a promotion and a raise, which had her humming even louder. She needed a treat.

She stopped abruptly in front of a case overflowing with jewelry. She’d always loved her grandmother, Eleanor, and was devastated when she passed away. Amongst the watches and necklaces, a familiar sparkle caught her eye. It was unmistakable. Grandma Eleanor’s engagement ring.

Her fingers trembled as she pointed at the ring, the words tumbling out of her mouth. “That one! The one with the… the sparkly… let me see it!” The shop owner, a woman with a perpetually weary face, grunted and produced the ring. Maya stared at it, a wave of warmth washing over her.

She touched the cool metal, the delicate stones. A giggle escaped her lips. This was a gift. For her. For now. For always.
