Chloe burst into the pawn shop, her laughter echoing in the quiet space. She'd just aced her final exam, and a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She wanted a reward. She wanted anything that would remind her of the feeling of being free.

"Oh wow," she breathed, her voice filled with delight. "I want to see that!" The shopkeeper, an elderly woman with kind eyes, brought the ring to her. Chloe felt an overwhelming sense of contentment as she held it. This was something real.
