The morning had been a riot of color and flavor. David had woken up early, humming a tune as he’d prepared breakfast. The sun streaked across the counter and his energy surged through him. He was ready to present his thesis to Professor Anya Sharma, his guiding light and intellectual sparring partner. He envisioned a lively discussion, a battle of wits that would end with her insightful smile and praise.

He bounded into the university's hallowed halls, heart racing, and found Professor Sharma’s office empty. He approached the secretary, who looked up with a knowing sadness.

"Professor Sharma retired, David," she said softly. "A week ago."

The words struck him with the force of a physical blow. The colors of the morning began to fade, the air in the room turning stagnant. The joy he had felt moments ago withered away like a dying flower. The project lost its luster.
