Eliza whistled as she strolled down the street, her arms laden with groceries. The aroma of freshly baked bread from the corner bakery filled the air, and she inhaled deeply, a delicious thought bubbling in her mind of the simple dinner she was preparing. Tonight, she was hosting Liam and she was excited; she had a new playlist ready. She skipped the last few steps to her apartment. Her phone buzzed; it was a text from Liam saying he was running late. She grabbed her phone to text back, but then she saw his latest post on LinkedIn. He was posing proudly in front of a sprawling, opulent, glass-and-steel building, the caption reading, ‘Thrilled to announce my promotion to Regional Director.’ A sourness rose in her throat. Liam had always said he was still working as a data entry clerk. Her shoulders slumped; the grocery bags suddenly felt heavy in her hands.
