The aroma of fresh paint and new beginnings swirled around Elena as she unpacked in the master bedroom. This house, perched on a hill overlooking the city, was her escape, a place where she could finally breathe. She was practically humming a tuneless melody, her energy overflowing. While looking for a place to put her jewelry, she pushed against the wall of the walk-in closet, discovering an unexpected lightness.

With a grunt of effort, she found a concealed latch and opened the door. Her jaw dropped. Leading away from the closet was a secret passage. Her foot automatically stepped across the threshold, and the passage started to lead down.
