"Come on, slowpoke!" Maya shouted, practically vibrating with pent-up energy, as she led her little brother toward the old oak tree in the backyard. She practically skipped, her braids bouncing. Even the thick smell of demolition felt strangely invigorating.

She climbed the tree with a speed that belied her age, easily reaching the sturdy branch where she and her friends had built a secret hideout. From her vantage point, the whole yard seemed to shimmer with possibility. She felt a lightness in her chest, a giddiness that made her want to sing.

Her brother, trailing behind, finally reached her, his face a mix of awe and trepidation. "Are you going to be sad, Maya?" he asked, his voice small. She shook her head, a dazzling smile lighting up her face. "No way! This is amazing, Leo! Look at the world, it's all waiting for us!"
